Alterations made to our storyboard

Alterations

After receiving the audience feedback from our pitch we have decided to alter the last minute of our video, instead of having our two actors simply walk past one another, we thought that having them sing by each other would be much more expressive. We shall either locate our ending scene on the bridge or on the roof top of an empty carpark. Both destinations are great to consider as for their scenic views. Making these few changes to our work will compliment our chosen 'concept' based video.

Benefits of filming on top of the carpark:

1) The top of the carpark is empty during the week, therefore we will have a large amount of space to film

2) The car park has the view of the Windsor Castle

3) We wont have the issue of having to seek permission from the public

4) It will add an urban feel to our music promo

Disadvantages of filming on top of the carpark:

1) If the lamp posts are not in use are shots will be too dark

2) To include the scenic views we will have to film mostly wide shots

3) If it rains there is no shelter

Benefits of filming on Eton Bridge:

1) The bridge is nicely lit so there wont be any issues when it comes to lighting

2) Very scenic as for the river, swans and busy atmosphere

3) Nice well known meeting point

4) Reliable destination as we have previously filmed there

Disadvantages of filming on Eton Bridge:

1) May need to seek permission from public

2) As there is a busy atmosphere we ay have difficulty listening to the music

3) Chance of bumping into members of the public

Costume research

Costume:

For our music promo we decided to go for a casual clothing style. The purpose of this is to reflect upon the relaxed vibe of the indie/rock genre.

Below are our final choices for costume and makeup:

Joe dressed for filming

As you can see, Joe is dressed in a long black jumper with a gold chain overlaying. His jeans are a light blue faded colour with distinct rips on both legs. Overall we believe this look works well and links with our chosen genre 'indie rock' genre. The simplistic styling of our actors dress sense allows the audience to focus more on the meaning behind the lyrics, rather than the styling of his clothing.

Tallulah dressed for filming
Tallulah is also wearing a rather simplistic outfit, her ripped jeans are purposeful for matching Joe's edgy look. We hoped for Tallulah to have a warm feeling to her style, so we dressed her in an autumnal orange/brown winter jumper to create a romantic sense of warmth. The golden tones within her hair compliments her look and adds a glowing healthy touch to her skin tone.

Makeup and hair:

To compliment our romantic theme throughout our promo, we thought our actresses makeup should appear natural and slightly dewy. Going for a natural look would attract our target audience, as the star icon would seem youthful and therefore setting a good example to teenagers who may feel the need to cover up their insecurities. Tallulah's foundation is almost exactly the same shade as her skin

tone, it does not have a entirely matte finish which therefore produces a natural healthy glow. The autumnal eyeshadow contrasts beautifully against her big green eyes. A little amount of mascara defines the colour of her green eyes. We thought that our actress would suit a rose colour on her lips, to make them seem full and to deliver connotations of love and romance. Our actress wore her hair in a half-up half-down hairstyle flowing freely, so that the warm tones of her highlights complimented her warm glowing complexion.

Digipak ideas:

For our digipak we intend to incorporate the rose into our panels. The rose within our video is symbolic towards feelings of romance and love, therefore using the rose as a method of advertisement will clearly link to the visuals and vocals of our piece. We wish to keep our panels simplistic to resemble the alternative instrumental. Below are a few test shots for our digipak, Joe is positioned in the centre of the white backdrop on the stool we are using for our promo. The unique lighting effect shown within a few of our sample images were achieved by the adjustment of the exposure setting on my Canon 700D. The lighting effect was actually accidental, however after reviewing our images in class, we realised that the lighting effect linked with our indie genre, and represented the quirkiness of the 'Nighttime' song lyrics. No alterations have been made to these images in post-editing, all images were purely captured on set with a few changes to the exposure and shutter speed in the settings mode:

I have had a few different ideas for our poster design. As our promo incorporates the rose as a metaphor for romance, it would make sense to feature it within our poster and start to use it as a main source of promotion almost making it the symbol our band will be instantly recognised for.

Props list

At the moment there are only a few items on our prop list. We wish to keep our video rather simplistic to resemble the genre of indie rock promos. Careful consideration of our list has been put into place to make sure each prop has a symbolic/major purpose within our video. The majority of our props are aesthetically pleasing to the eye which will help the promo to appear clean cut and pleasant to the viewer.

Casting

Casting

The majority of individuals who choose to listen to music which is classed as an 'indie' genre are roughly aged between 16 to 25. Therefore we decided to cast people who are aged similarly to our target audience. Our chosen song 'Night Time' by 'The XX' discusses the difficulties within a relationship, as a result of this our group thought it would be appropriate to feature a couple within our promo. Casting a male and female would help to make a connection between the visuals and vocals. To make filming quick and efficient we considered casting teenagers who are going to be comfortable in front of the camera and aren't embarrassed to act in public. Therefore we carried out some research and narrowed down our possibilities to those who we think will fit the part perfectly!

Our final decisions:

Our male actor 'Joe' is currently studying Media at College and enjoys making music promos. Joe is willing to help out with our A2 project, and has informed us that he feels comfortable performing also.

Our female actress 'Tallulah' feels perfectly confident performing in front of an audience. She has featured in dramas on TV before, been casted in a variety of musicals, is becoming more recognisable as a model and enjoys singing and dancing in her free time.

Night time Music Video: A2 Media Studies presentation

Feedback from our class presentation:

Overall my class had positive comments to share about our initial plans presented. The students along with my my Media teacher thought our storyline is artistic and would appeal to our target audience. They thought the use of a projector presenting themes of nature and referencing 'Nighttime' cleverly linked to the song lyrics. Initially we chose to produce a narrative/performance based music promo, however our teacher informed us that the metaphorical uses of objects and colouring would categorise nicely under a 'conceptual/performance' based video. Therefore we have chosen to follow our teacher comments by planning to film a conceptual/performance music promo.

Audition Video

Shown below is Joe's audition video:

The video consists of Joe answering some simple questions about why he feels he should star in our music video. At the end of the clip, Joe is asked to lip sync to a song of his choice. This enabled us to see whether Joe would appear confident in front of the camera. We unfortunately did not get the chance to audition Tallulah as she has quite a busy schedule, however as I have previously performed alongside Tallulah in musicals I was confident that she would perform brilliantly in our promo!

As you can see, Joe performed confidently within the audition, therefore we have decided to cast him the male vocal role.

Location

When it came to location scouting we wished to film somewhere which was scenic, photogenic and spacious. After carrying out some further research for locations online, we managed to narrow down our decisions. Windsor and Eton especially appealed to both of us as their are major spots which would be perfect to shoot at, for example the bridge from Windsor to Eton, the river, cute side streets, restaurants/cafes, benches etc. As our chosen genre of indie rock linked used references to nature frequently, we thought this would be the perfect destination to film at as for the passing by of the swans, the water and the greenery. This location would create a romantic vibe which links with our theme, as for its pleasant views and warming colours.

Below is a short filming journal we made whilst location scouting:

We have decided to film in two different location, one being Windsor/Eton and the other in school. To compliment the indie genre, we though it may be a unique idea to film some shots in front of a white backdrop which is located in one of our art rooms. Our plan is to shoot the girl and the boy individually and also together, singing and portraying negative body language to symbolise the hurt felt from one another. We have managed get permission to use one of the schools projectors, and with this we are going to create a powerpoint with a variety of different images and short clips displaying aspects of nature, weather and indie patterns. Our purpose of shooting in multiple of different destinations is to add a sense of appeal to our video and to make sure we are considering technological features which ties in nicely with our media based generation. Making the association with technology will appeal to our young target audience as it is familiar to all.

Our first plan:

We initially decided to film in London, as we thought the busy atmosphere would create some lively shots. Also we would have had choice of colour, space and lighting. However after further thought we realised that filming in London would be too much of a risk, because by the time we would have reached our destination we would be limited due to changing of lighting and short amount of time. Reaching London after a day at school would cost quite a bit and would require a serious time schedule to make sure we filmed everything we hoped to. Therefore to make things easy and accessible we've decided that the Windsor/Eton location would be the best suited to our needs.

Analysis of chosen song

Analysis of our chosen song 'NIGHTTIME':

'You mean that much to me

And it's hard to show
Gets hectic inside of me
When you go
Can I confess these things
To you
Well I don't know
Embedded in my chest
And it
Hurts to hold'

Breakdown:
This first verse is sung by the girl. She is expressing how her feelings towards her love are so strong that they are almost impossible to show. When her partner leaves her side she almost develops withdraw symptoms as she has formed such a loving connection towards him. The girl is almost embarrassed about admitting her feelings, therefore she keeps hold of them and as a result of this she finds things difficult as her feelings gradually grow over time.

'I couldn't spill my heart

My eyes gleam looking in from the dark
I walk out in stormy weather
Hold my words, keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip
Should release but just tighten my grip'

Breakdown:
The girl continues to sing throughout the second verse. 'I couldn't spill my heart' - is implying that she is still having difficulty expressing her true feelings towards the boy. The mention of being in the dark suggests that she feels isolated within the relationship as they don't work as a team, instead their relationship is rather separate and they work as individuals. Once again the mention of 'story weather' represents the negativity felt as the boy is not their to support. This idea that she is having to walk steadily hints that perhaps she is slightly anxious about damaging their relationship by saying the wrong thing.

'Night time

Sympathize
I've been working on
White lies
So I'll tell the truth
I'll give it up to you
And when the day come
It will have all been fun
We'll talk about it soon'

Breakdown:
The songs title of 'Night time' is sung in the chorus. The word may symbolise peacefulness as the girl perhaps finds that sleep takes her mind of the troubles within their relationship. The noun 'sympathise' is defined as feeling of pity and sorrow towards another. The girl admits that she has been telling 'white lies', therefore suggesting that she may be hiding something from her partner to protect him. The chorus finishes with her stating that she'll talk about it soon. This implies that whatever she may be keeping from the boy is something which happened a while ago (or continuing to happen) , and as she is afraid to loose him, she decides to prolong telling him.

'And I couldn't spill my heart

My eyes gleam
Looking in from the dark
I walk out in stormy weather
Hope my words keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip
Should release but just tighten my grip'

Breakdown:
The girl repeats the second verse, the use of repetition depicts how the situation is ongoing almost as their relationship is similar to a broken record. 'I couldn't spill my heart' - is implying that she is still having difficulty expressing her true feelings towards the boy. The mention of being in the dark suggests that she feels isolated within the relationship as they don't work as a team, instead their relationship is rather separate and they stand out more as individual. Once again the mention of 'story weather' represents the negativity felt as the boy is not their to support. This idea that she is having to walk steadily hints that perhaps she is slightly anxious about damaging their relationship by saying the wrong thing.
